Jana Gana Mana (Hindi: जन गण मन; Bengali: জন গণ মন — "The Minds of All
People") is the national anthem of India. Originally written in formal
Bengali language, it is the first of five stanzas of a poem composed
by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. First performed in 1911, Jana

Dubai's First Traffic Lights

" Dubai 's Drivers have always been impatient, no more so than when waiting at Traffic Lights. The Drivers used to sound their car horns if they thought the lights were taking too long to change. For no apparent reason the Traffic Lights were switched off between midnight and 6 am. At least the Residents of the nearby Apartment Blocks could get some sleep. However no one needed an alarm clock! Promptly at 6am the car horns started again"

Taken from the roof of the Carlton Hotel in Diera in 1967. Clock Tower can be seen in the distance (arrow). In the centre of the photo is the old Dubai Municipality Building . Behind that is the Dubai Electricity Company's Power Station that supplied Dubai 's electricity. All the buildings in the foreground have been demolished.

Airport facilities were minimal. A compacted sand runway, a small terminal building and a service building formed Dubai 's Airport in the 1960s.

A new Terminal Building and a hard surfaced runway had been built by the mid 1970s

In the mid 1950s Dubai 's Creek filled with sand becoming very shallow and difficult to navigate. Dubai 's trade was affected. Diera's coastline was eroding and buildings and roads along the coast were threatened. Dubai 's Merchants and People were complaining.

Sheikh Rashid solved the problem by employing Overseas AST to dredge Dubai Creek to 20 feet deep and make it navigable again. Dredge material was pumped ashore to reclaim new land areas on both sides of Dubai Creek. Dredged material was also used to recover Deira's Coastline and build the Deira Corniche.

Doesn't appear to be too much traffic - non existent in fact! Must have been a major road junction in Old Dubai to have a Traffic Policeman on duty.

Speed Cameras: Dubai Police were always keen to use technology to help their cause. Drivers had to keep a look out for VW Combi Vans parked on the side of the road!

Hatta Road – Well do you see Academic city here

Jumeriah Beach Road joined Jumeirah and Umm Sequiem to Dubai . Although the road shown here is tarmac, further towards Umm Sequiem the tarmac disappeared. The road did not lead anywhere and came to a dead end around where Burj Al Arab is today.

The first is 1949 showing the extent of Dubai. Top left of course is Deira, bottom left is Shindagah and the buildings on the right are Bur Dubai. There wasn't much of it was there! Note that the Creek is silted up. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the then Ruler of Dubai, wisely invested in dredging it as part of his vision to continue developing Dubai as a major trading centre.

The next photo is Shindagah, the area that is now being preserved where possible and with other parts being re-built in the old style. The photo was taken in 1962.

And just one more of these really old photos, this one of Al Fahidi Fort, now the very much worth seeing Dubai Museum. Taken in 1950.

And on to photos I took when I arrived in Dubai in 1977. There were still quite a few of the old traditional houses and buildings, windtowers included.

And plenty of narrow alleyways with sand floors trodden hard over generations between the traditional buildings. There were very few made-up footpaths.

More to come on future postings. I'll give the links to the previous postings too, so anyone who wants to look through all the old photos can do so easily.

I've had some requests to post photos of Dubai when we lived here back in the late seventies. So here are the first ones, from 1977 and 1978. These are Jumeirah Beach, about where the Open Beach is now... that's how it is now in the last photo.

Villas right on the beach, high tides went right up to the walls and often swirled into the lanes between the villas. The beach was only a few metres wide, as you can see.

They've done a bit around the Creek too:

More photos from the late seventies, the first being the apartment block I lived in - luxurious in seventies Dubai! It was in Deira just behind Al Ghurair City, which didn't exist at the time.

I was on the top, sixth, floor so I had pretty good views across into the downtown area of Deira. The next photo shows the kind of buildings that were all over the area - basically private villas. The big building being constructed in the background is Al Ghurair Centre.

And this photo is a bit later when Al Ghurair Centre was finished. It was the largest building in the Middle East and had the most luxurious apartments in Dubai.

A few more photos taken from the window of my apartment. Notice the new road stopping short of the villa - it was soon demolished to allow the road to be completed.

Some scientists believe that the earth began billions of years ago as a huge ball of swirling dust and gases. As the earth grew larger, new materials piled up on the outside and squeezed the materials inside. Energy from all this activity was released as heat.

Eventually most of the iron in the earth melted and collected at the core, or center. This released more heat. The temperature at the core became hot—perhaps more than 9000°F (4,982°C). Lighter materials rose to the outside of the earth and cooled, forming the earth’s crust.

If you dig in your backyard, don’t worry about running into the earth’s core. You’d have to dig a hole 4,000 miles (6,437 kilometers) deep!

Air Piano - No Need to Touch Keys With Omer Yosha's Airpiano

Omer Yosha’s Airpiano is very similar to the famous Theremin invented in Russia around the year 1919.

“The theremin is one of the earliest electronic musical instruments, and the first musical instrument played without being touched,” Wikipedia explains.

The major difference between the Airpiano and a therepin is that while the theremin mimics a symphony conductor, the AirPiano plays like a piano, and is obviously more advanced than the theremin.

Music is created without even touching the keys, and simply hovering over it with a hand allowed the tone to carry out.

The secret to this, according to creator Omer Yosha, is a virtual matrix of faders and keys that correlate with MIDI instructions. The latter is fed to and interpreted by software such as the high-end Ableton LIVE. I really don’t know what that means but it sounds smart.

This is yet another cool usability innovation built on top of the iPhone / iPod Touch. Friend Book was developed by an outfit called Tapulous, a software development company exclusively focussed on building applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch (and the makers of Twinkle - a native iPhone Twitter client).

Apart from this great feature, there are some other nice “to have’s” such as Facedialer, which does exactly what the name says. Considering that most mobile phone users call 10 people 80% of the time, this could be a nicer quickdial list.

The astonishing spectacle of a leopard savaging a crocodile has been captured for the first time on camera.

A series of incredible pictures taken at a South African game reserve document the first known time that a leopard has taken on and defeated one of the fearsome reptiles.

The photographs were taken by Hal Brindley, an American wildlife photographer, who was supposed to be taking pictures of hippos from his car in the Kruger National Park.

The giant cat raced out of cover provided by scrub and bushes to surprise the crocodile, which was swimming nearby.

A terrible and bloody struggle ensued. Eventually, onlookers were amazed to see the leopard drag the crocodile from the water as the reptile fought back.

With the crocodile snapping its powerful jaws furiously, the two animals somersaulted and grappled. Despite the crocodile's huge weight and strength, the leopard had the upper hand catching its prey by the throat.

Eventually the big cat was able to sit on top of the reptile and suffocate it.

In the past, there have been reports of crocodiles killing leopards, but this is believed to the first time that the reverse scenario has been observed.

Mr Brindley said: 'I asked many rangers in South Africa if they had ever heard of anything like this and they all said no.

"It just doesn't make sense. The meat you get out of a crocodile is just not worth the risk it takes a predator to acquire. The whole scene happened in the course of about 5 minutes. Then the leopard was gone.

"I drove away, elated in disbelief. It may have been the most amazing thing I've ever seen."

Ellie Rose, a reptile keeper at London Zoo, said: "Normally, crocodiles are well able to defend themselves against attack. I can't think of any examples of this happening before."

These shots capture the splendour and horror of a two ton great white shark weighing leaping 10ft from the water as it closes inevitably on its victim. The wildlife photographer Chris Fellows spends over half of each year waiting off the coast of South Africa to capture the sharks at their grisly work. Liew Thow Lin: the real-life Magnetic Man

Liew Thow Lin is known as the "Magnetic Man" of Malaysia, because of his incredible ability to stick metal objects to his body.

After a deep medical study, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) lecturer Nasrul Humaimi Mahmood said this ability was probably associated with "suction properties in his skin." Professor Dr. Mohamed Amin Alias, from UTM's electrical engineering faculty in Johor, agreed.

After seeing Liew perform, the professor did research on the matter, and decided, "His skin has a special suction effect that can help metal stick to it." "These powers are not an illusion," he said, "That is why his two sons and two grandchildren also have the magnetic-like ability.

They have his genes." Dr. Atsusi Kono, former chief physician at the Djo Si Idai Hospital in Tokyo, was so impressed with a Russian he saw doing this stunt, that he commented: "There is absolutely no doubt that the objects stick as if their bodies were magnetic."

Dr. Friedbert Karger of the Max Planck Institute in Germany, in January 1997, investigated another "magnetic man" named Miroslaw Magola who was born in Poland in the 1960s, and was able to demonstrate the ability "to pick up a cup from the floor without touching it, and to control its suspension in mid-air."

Shark skin
Scales from the skin of a shark. These sharply pointed placoid scales are also known as dermal teeth or denticles. They give the shark's skin the feel of sandpaper. The tip of each scale is made of dentine overlayed with dental enamel. The lower part of each scale is made of bone. The scales disrupt turbulence over the skin, considerably reducing the drag on the shark as it swims. This design has been investigated by engineers for use on the surfaces of aircraft and boats.

Long-eared Jerboa
"The Mickey Mouse of the desert" - mouse-like rodent with
a long tail, long hind legs for jumping, and exceptionally large ears.
The jerboa, found in the deserts of Mongolia and China,
is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List

Pink Fairy Armadillo
It is found in central Argentina where it inhabits dry grasslands and
sandy plains with thorn bushes and cacti. It has the ability to
bury itself completely in a matter of seconds if frightened.
The Pink Fairy Armadillo burrows small holes near ant colonies in
dry dirt. It feeds mainly on ants and ant larvae near its burrow.

Long-beaked echidna
Echidnas are one of the two types of mammals that lay eggs
(the other one is platypus). The long-beaked echidna is found
in New Guinea, where it is widespread.

Elephant shrew
They are widely distributed across the southern part of Africa,
and although common nowhere, can be found in almost any type
of habitat, from the Namib Desert to boulder-strewn outcrops
in South Africa to thick forest.

Star nosed mole
The Star-nosed Mole lives in wet lowland areas and eats small
invertebrates, aquatic insects, worms and mollusks.
It is a good swimmer and can forage along the bottoms of
streams and ponds. Like other moles, this animal digs shallow
surface tunnels for foraging; often, these tunnels exit underwater.
The incredibly sensitive nasal tentacles are covered with almost
one hundred thousand minute touch receptors known as Eimer's organs.

Saiga Antelope

Saiga is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN.
There is an estimated total number of 50,000 Saigas today,
which live in Kalmykia, three areas of Kazakhstan
and in two isolated areas of Mongolia.

Patagonian Cavy (Mara)
A large rodent that looks sort of like a rabbit,
sort of like a donkey. The Patagonian Mara lives in Central
and Southern Argentina.
Maras inhabit arid grasslands and scrub desert.

Matamata Turtle
The mata mata inhabits slow moving, blackwater streams, stagnant pools,
marshes, and swamps ranging into northern Bolivia, eastern Peru,
Ecuador, eastern Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas,
and northern and central Brazil. The mata mata is strictly an aquatic
species but it prefers standing in shallow water where its
snout can reach the surface to breathe.

The turtle is found primarily in inland, slow-moving
fresh water rivers and streams. Cantor's giant soft-shelled turtles can
grow up to 6 feet (about 2 meters) in length
and weigh more than 100 pounds (about 50 kilograms).

Dog Adopted a Baby Goat

A paternal dog has adopted an abandoned baby goat as his surrogate child.

Billy the boxer has become the constant companion of the 12-day old kid called Lilly. He sleeps with the goat, licks her clean, and protects her from any dangers at Pennywell Farm wildlife centre at Buckfastleigh, near Totnes, Devon .

The kid was abandoned by her mother when she was only a few hours old and adopted by paternal Billy when his owner Elizabeth Tozer began hand rearing the goat.
The unusual bond has developed over the last month and the pair are now inseparable.
Elizabeth said: "Lilly follows Billy around which is really quite amusing to watch and Billy sleeps with the goat and cleans her mouth after she feeds."

Lilly was the smallest of a litter of three kids and her mother abandoned her because she could only care for the two stronger ones. The pair have attracted quite a crowd at the animal centre and the staff are keen to see how their relationship will develop.
